Excursion Courses

Excursion will be held on the second day during the conference (October 20th, 2013). There are nine one-day courses (from A to I courses), and three half-day courses. Please refer to the following map for the location. "Kaike Daisen SEA TO SUMMIT" is jointly held on the same day.

A. Trekking: Explore the beech forest and learn about the history of Daisenji Temple

Trekking: Explore the beech forest and learn about the history of Daisenji Temple
Take the scenery road; Daisen Parkway and drive around Mt. Daisen in the morning. In the afternoon, our guides will take you to trek in one of the largest beech forests that sits in the heart of Mt. Daisen. Visit a few important cultural properties and learn about the history of Daisenji Temple.

Take the scenery road; Daisen Parkway and drive around Mt. Daisen in the morning and in the afternoon, our very popular course; downhill biking at Mt. Daisen. From beech forest to blue ocean, it is about 25 km long from middle of Mt. Daisen to the Japan Sea. Visit beautiful mountain stream, local handcraft school, farm and so on.


C. Eco Program: Experience the eco program and explore Oku-Daisen beech forest

Oku-Daisen contains a forest of beech and oak trees. It allows us to produce the most popular water brand in Kansai and Chugoku area. Experience some special eco programs in the forest. In the afternoon, explore the old passage that takes you from Okayama to Mt. Daisen with the local guides.

It will take you about 3 hours to reach the top of the mountain and 6 hours in total. Go up in the beautiful beech forest in the first half of the course. After the sixth stage of the mountain where teh forest ends and the alpine plants start, gorgeous view of Japan Sea awaits you. Enjoy the amazing panoramic view from the top of Mt. Daisen.

There is a little hill in the park that looks over great Mt. Daisen. Around the time of your visit, it will be filled with a million red salvias. It looks like a fairyland and is worth paying a visit. Then, go to a little village between the mountains called Fukuoka area and explore the local specialties like hand-made buckwheat noodle and sake.

History of Iron Manufacturing: Explore the village of the best iron manufacturing in Japan
Oku-Hino and Oku-Izumo are the little area in the Chugoku Mountains. Hayao Miyazaki, a famous animation producer, took this area as a model of his award-winning movie "Princess of Mononoke". The area used to produce more than 90% of iron Japan had at the time. The village has been left untouched by the modern technology, and brings you back to the good old days.

Sakaiminato City is known for hometown of the Japanese famous cartoonist Mr. Shigeru Mizuki. Mizuki Shigeru Road is a street dedicated to Youkai ( a class of supernatural monsters in Japanese folklore) characters that appear in his cartoon works. A visit to this town might make you feel like you are in a different world...! After that, take a look at the brand-new largest solar park in Japan and also visit Yonago Waterbird Sanctuary where we welcome migrating swans in winter.

Tottori Sand Dunes are the biggest sand dunes in Japan and are designated as World Geopark. You will be overwhelmed wtih the beauty of the sand hill and enjoy the Sand Museum. Then, visit natural garden created by Mr. Paul Smither at National Urban Greenery Fair.

Mt.Mitoku is aimed to be incorporated in Daisen-Oki National Park. Climb up the pilgrim path to pay a visit to National Treasure Nageire Hall which is located on a sheer precipice. Explore a historical area in Kurayoshi with old warehouses.


Half-Day: Sea kayaking at Kaike beach

Sea Kayaking
Kaike Onsen is a seaside hot spring area located in Yonago City, a city on the western edge of Tottori prefecture that also shares a border with Shimane prefecture.  Kaike Onsen is a rare hot spring in Japan where a hot spring and bathing in the sea can be enjoyed at the same time. Just a step away from the ryokan you are staying at in your swim suit will take you to a marine blue colored resort land. Sea Kayaking is available at the Kaike Beach.

Half-Day: Strolling around the old part of Yonago

Strolling around the old part of Yonago
Experience and discover the essence and culture of Yonago. This tour goes to old downtown of Yonago, where the traditional residences and old merchant houses still remain standing in their splendor. Feel the old Japanese atmosphere and discover another charm of Japan.

Joint Event - Kaike Daisen SEA TO SUMMIT - 

Sea to Summit is an environmental event the outdoor clothing and equipment manufacturer MontBell launched in 2009, aiming to encourage people to enjoy outdoor sports and think about the environment. The participants continuously conduct three types of races - kayaking, cycling and climbing. Please feel the water cycle in the world of nature by running from the sea to the summit of Mt. Daisen!
